Module 3 question 5

List the negative effects and potential harmful effects, also in view of appropriate legislation, of a non-existent record keeping system of animals and their history. Discuss what can be done to comply with legislation, and list possible solutions.

Problems without record keeping:

é If no record is kept of the previous owners it is difficult to return the animal after being rehabilitated.

é If the age of the animal is unknown the wrong diet can be given, and the wrong treatment.

é If no records has been kept it is not possible to know has medication when& how much was given. This can become a problem if the animal needs to be treated.

é It is important to know that the animal was use to eating because if the diet changes drastically it can get diarrhea & die.

é If previous record has been kept of an animal, but it was actually unknown (gender) & they discovered something new the record has to be changed.

é A Behavioral record needs to be updated & kept, if a person deals with a dangerous animal & does not know it, there can be consequences.

é If an animal has a previous contagious disease & comes into contact with any of the animals & there is no record of the disease an epidemic can be started.

é Records have to be kept of incidents that happened between an animal & human. Say an animal (lion) attacked someone there must be proof for future reference & to be safe .

Applicable legislation.

é It is absolutely important to keep a legislation record of all the animals you have. If you don’t have any legislation like: Transport permits, Breeding permits & Keeping permits there are consequences. If Nature conservation visits your facility & you don’t have the applicable legislation, they will take away the animals, give you a fine or lock you up in jail! In other words the facility can come to an end for the neglecting of legislation! There for it is wise to keep all the record of your legislation for future reference & evidence.

Possible solutions.

{ Make it a priority to keep records of everything.

{ Train people to keep records or assign a person to do the specific job.

{ Use record keeping methods like “Vet Master”, Write in a record book or keep a file system of animal records & permits.
