Captive animal management: level 4

· Feedback on training.

© Training going well, students a bit confused on plants & Ecology. Students that are behind are catching up the rest are up to date. An extra class on ecology has been given.

· Feedback on research project.

§ We are busy walking our caracals Joan & Meisikind in hopes of training her so good to let her walk with guests on a caracal walk and to get them back into shape. They are doing really well, Joan is walking in the 400 ha, but Meisikind is still walking inside the WLC.

§ Some of the 2nd year’s mane some enrichment tools for the big cats to play with. They used a stick and attached some ostrich feathers on them. They also gave the 2 lions a Impala skin to play around with & it was very entertaining to them & they pulled it around.

§ We are currently planning o spending more time with the 2 lions & cheetah. We want to learn how to feed the cheetah on our own.

· Presentation of assignments(s).

é Presentations of new assignments due for next week Wednesday.

· Handout & discussion of new assignments.

é We discussed our new workbook Module 2: Interact with visitors in a facility:

é Compile a briefing on your facility, the enclosures, and also on the animals that are present at the facility in terms of ‘exhibit interpretation’ which relates to the uses of species on display and their significance to biodiversity. Present this to your peers for review and eventually to the business manager.

é Develop ideas for your facility for educational purposes within the facility, or as promotion for your facility

é Develop educational items and programmes for application outside your facility, such as games or posters about species, ecology or conservation etc.

· Research for new assignments.

{ Find out about animals that have to be released: when, why, were & how?

{ When the servals will be released, we are planning to put a tracking collar on her to monitor her movements. Have to find out where we are releasing her & if we can get a tracking collar.

{ Find out about the servals conditions were he struggles to balance from a previous vet-nurse (Charmaine).
