Module 3 Rollout

Module 3:

é Care for animals in facility

é Measure, estimate and calculate physical quantities and explore and prove geometrical relationships in 2 and 3 dimensional space in the life and workplace of an adult with increasing responsibilities

é Friday 19- Develop and / or review the job description of a wildlife caretaker at a wild life centre. Consider the different time frames, e.g. weekly and monthly.

é Tuesday 23- Design a daily log book that allows for the description of your daily tasks and feedback both from yourself as well as

é Wednesday 24- Describe the benefits of the policies and procedures. Determine a draft list of policies and procedures that you think

é Thursday 25- Lead a group discussion (notarized) about equipment and materials (e.g. disinfectants) not being recorded and stored properly, and list the possible negatives, such as injury, theft or delay that this may cause.

é Friday 26- List the negative effects and potential harmful effects, also in view of appropriate legislation, of a non-existent record keeping system of animals and their history. Discuss what can be done to comply with legislation, and list possible solutions.

é Tuesday 30- Determine measures by which to establish the levels of pest problems – both on plants and on animals – and develop control programs for the various pests. Include cost quotes for products and services as well as equipment lists. Create a policy and procedure indicating the process and regularity of control required.

é Wednesday 31- Draw up a menu for three of the current animals in the facility and indicate the meals they will receive. Indicate how ONE menu would change with age (and weight) and how you would encourage natural feeding behaviour. Also describe waste disposal

é Tuesday 1- For each of the 3 menus above, indicate the process by which the foods are received. This also includes the provider(s), regularity and costs.

é Wednesday 2- Related to the above menus, list potential problems with ordering systems for food and rations and come up with a well organized solution to allow for varied food types, related to species needs with age, and seasonal availability.

é Tuesday 6- Determine issues related to the storage of food items and list potential solutions.

é Wednesday 7- Lead a discussion on the lack of a budget system and the consequences thereof, and determine means and ways to solve this problem and implement the solution

é Thursday 8- Write two treatment / handling sheets of your observations of two species of animals

é Friday 9- Determine the methods of record keeping of the treatment of animals and the filing system in your facility. Report on the process by which one determines the applicability to use the treatment for similar animals.

é Tuesday 13- Discuss the challenges relating to the receipt and admission of new animals to the facility. Determine the process your facility uses and report on its efficacy.

é Wednesday 14- Re-assess the first list of potential Policy and Procedure documents. Report your growth in understanding considering the above points of concern in a wildlife facility.

é Thursday 15- Develop a policy and procedure document for each of the listed points. Present these to your peers for group review to finally present single collated documents to the business unit manager for approval and implementation.

é Friday 16- Implementation of the policies and procedures must be maintained. Develop a review plan by which this can be done on the performance of ONE of your policy and procedure documents. Implement your plan and initiate improvements as required to the policy and procedure.

é Tuesday 20- Research, employ and review facility’s carrying capacity. Plan the implementation of rotational grazing options and irrigation needs program.

é Wednesday 21- Evaluate re-stocking needs of your facility, then plan, present and implement game capture.

é Thursday 22- Consider addition of, and training for, new species handling and/or incorporation, e.g. snakes – venomous snake handling.

é Friday 23- Plan, present and build new enclosures with specific non-stressful corralling methods and structures. Present information brochures on two species as to their enclosure needs such as breeding status and dominance structures.

Feedback on training.

§ Students are doing well, still very enthusiastic!

§ Students are interacting more with the animals, going with on lion walks & assisted with caracal walks, some of them feel comfortable feeding more dangerous animals like he lions.

§ They are able to prepare food & feed some of the animals on their own.

§ They show a lot of initiative & come up with ideas on enrichment.

ê It would be a great idea to open a small souvenir area in the shop selling:

ê Fridge magnets with a photo of them it, if we had an instant photo printer.

ê Feathers of our birds in the aviary with an info page on the bird. (The feathers come from cleaning their enclosure & they are found on the ground.)

ê Stickers of all the animals for kids to collect.

Services:

ê The Wildlife Centre has various tours they present.

· Daily tour: This tour is conducted by the paid staff which is an hour. Guests travel by each enclosure & the tour guides talk about the animals.

· Feeding tour: This tour is conducted by the students, which is about an hour & a half. Guests pay to feed some of the non –dangerous animals like antelope & giraffes. They also get to watch the student feed all the other animals.

· Sleep-over: The guests sleep over in a tent at the WLC. They do all the night checks & feedings with the person on night duty, in the morning the morning they help prepare the food & help feed.

· Breakfast tour: Guests book a breakfast on the deck where they eat while watching the animals in the boma next to them like, Giraffe, Zebra & Blue Wilde beest.

· Lion photos: Guests spend time with 2 lions accompanied by the students for safety & information. They then take photos with the lions.

· Lion walks: Guests walk with the lions in a closed off camp accompanied with the students. It’s for an hour; when the lions come back guest get to see their feeding.

· Lion feeding: Guests get to feed the lions by themselves & then spend time & take photos with them.

· Cheetah Walk: The guests walk with the cheetah & his trainer into a camped off site where he is released & the guests can take photos & see him in his natural habitat, however he has a tracking collar on him to help the trainer find him again. After the walk he gets his food from the trainer & guests get to see him feeding.

· Eco-life feeding tour: A special group of over sea veterinarians Take a feeding tour through the WLC, They get more information than normal tours & the tours are usually about 2 hours.

· Outside tours: These tours are the same as daily tours but it is for people who does not stay on the farm. The guests are driven from the main gate to the WLC by a driver, when the tour is over they are driven back.
